Junior Ben Brown’s team wins NASA SPHERES Challenge 2011
Junior Ben Brown and his robotics team won the national SPHERES Challenge 2011 contest sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The robot designed by the team took these honors on Monday January 23 in a series of round robin tests held aboard the International Space Station (ISS). High school students throughout the United States and the European Union (EU) created teams to compete in the contest whose goal was to write computer code to control robots here on earth and in space. Brown’s team was made up of five members from throughout Somerset County. Starting in September 2011, teams competed in both two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) contests. The finalist teams could view the last competition live and receive feedback from the astronauts as they put the robots through their paces.
